Stockton Mine

Stockton Opencast Mine has been sold to BT Mining Limited.

It is located between 500 m and 1100 m above sea level in the Buller Coalfield, 35 km north of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island. The area experiences high rainfall of approximately 6,000 mm annually, cool temperatures, considerable cloud and mist, and occasional frosts and snow.

The mine delivers high-quality steelmaking coal for export. The mine has sufficient economically recoverable resources to continue producing for at least another 20 years.

In 2007, Solid Energy completed a major project to collect and relocate native land snails from the Mt Augustus ridgeline.
